Bangladesh is a very small country of the world. Only about 150000 square kilometers but population are more then 160 million people. It is now one of the densely populated country in the world. Among the people living in the northern part are more disadvantaged, deprived, vulnerable, supportless, problems stricken and utterly resource poor. A lot of efforts has been continuing from the part of GO/NGO and other Agencies including private sectors to eradicate the poverty. But these efforts are bring very little change in poverty level of the poor.
Government and some NGOs are trying to bring the rural resource poor women and men out from poverty level through providing training and credit support and involving them in different profession but how far it is achieving the impact on their livelihood needs needs to be measured in order to make the initiatives more effective and efficient
The socio-economic condition of the poor is still very low. This even worse for the huge number of landless, small and marginal farmers. But the poor landless, small and marginal farmers have a lot of problems in getting access to formal institutional credit. They therefore are going to the borrow money from money lenders with high interest. In most cases they can not repay within the time period. As a result, to repay the loan, they need to sale the mere assets and gradually become more poor. The consequences of high interest credit has been reflecting negatively in their economic condition. Therefore, the real situation needs to be identified through gathering information directly from the participants. It needs to determine the constraints and problems they are encountering.
Further, the have access to the finances of the development actors having their traditional rules and regulations. As a result, they remain out of screen and live in a very deplorable condition. Their main needs is to mitigate their basic needs only. But in most cases they can mitigate the basic needs and requirements.
Most of the extreme poor are day laborer, beggar, maid servant and older aged. The government authorities and development actors over looking their needs and problems. They do not know service available in the society and about their rights.
They also always become the victim of violence and discrimination. They have no dignity at all. They are usually deprived, voiceless and no decision making power. Most of them are isolated from the mainstream society.
The development actors need to come forward with new and innovative interventions that will mitigate their needs.
