Problems Encountering by Women Living in Char Areas and ways to their right protection and empowerment Strategies

The issue of rights are the critical concern for the women living in char areas northern region of Bangladesh, where it needs to intervene and protect the rights of women and empower them in the society as they most vulnerable. It must have to be done by the non government organization.  There are evidences that socio-economic rights of poor and hard core poor women continue to be infringed at the char areas. Again, there exist domestic violence against women and violation of their rights at the household level is very common. Furthermore, they have no voting rights as their husbands do not allow them go out. The women have no access to participation and decision making at the household and in the community based development activities. Again, they lack of access to decision making about food and expenditure. It is also worth to add here that in the working area there exist the provision of dowry, polygamy, gender disparity, deprivation and repression on women. Considering this perspective it needs some consolidated efforts including awareness education, self governance, raising voice of women and legal support with a view to protect the rights of the women and increase their power, dignity and injustice.
In reality, there are some char areas of the northern region situated beside the Indian  border and it is closed to Nepal too. So far this is a critical and internationally identified route of trafficking especially for women and children around Nepal-Bangladesh-India and Pakistan. This route is also using for drug smuggling exclusively.
Local Government specially the Union Parishad representatives of the northern regions are not aware on their respective roles and responsibilities, democratic principles, rule of law including governance though they are the only authority assigned to protect rights of poor people and establish governance at local level as well as can accelerate community based self governance initiatives.
The area is extremely poverty stricken and therefore, monga (extreme poverty) is the perennial problem for the poor and hard poor household. The people of the area face monga as the area is extremely flood prone. Every year 2-4 times flood affect the area and huge number of household go under water and the flood take lives and damage property,  shelter, livestock s, assets, road, and crops and adding new miseries and vulnerability in the lives of the people including women. Having the provision of disparity and discrimination in food distribution most of the women and girls are malnourished. Therefore, it essential to empower the women through involving them in income earning activities to increase their dignity in the household that will directly increase their decision making authority and raise voice.
The non government organizations should design the projects to address these problems through interventions that will protect the rights of the women and reduce food insecurity through increasing the job skills as well as business skills on different income earning sources so that they can protect and overcome the monga and get esteem in the household and society. Furthermore, it needs to increase their participation in the development activities, so that they can keep pace with the mainstream society. The projects need to ensure their participation in development activities and ensure access to resources.
