Generally the women in Bangladesh face different type of problems in the family and society as well. They are very little authority to take decisions by their in the family as well as outside the family. There exist the practices that the women will have within the boundary of household. They have no authority to go out for any purpose. They cannot take any decision regarding what to do and not to do for the family. They are controlled by the male member of the family and society. They have permission to take part in the community activities. They are tortured, undermined, repressed, raped, humiliated, and disregarded. Further, they have actually no assets, dignity and power in the family and society where they live. On the other hand, the violence against women and girls are the regular phenomenon in the family and society. Most of the poor and hard core poor women are not involved in income earning activities. So, they have no honor in the family as well as society. Again, there are prevalent custom of dowry and polygamy which are the cause of torture and repression. In the male dominated society they women do not get the justice at all.
In rural areas, there is provision of mediation which is generally leaded by the well off people and as a result the verdict usually go in favor of musclemen and well off people who have influence in the society. The poor women and men have nothing to say against this injustice. They have no ways to disobey the verdict. If someone, go to take court for justice, they must have be the victim of torture.
Some of the development organizations have been working to empower the women in the family and society. They can undertake the strategies are, awareness raising on the development issues including rights of women and girls, capacity building of women on income generating options, ensuring their involvement in income generating activities, increasing their mobility, assisting them in establishing linkages with local authority and service providers, ensuring facilities they need, community mobilization and making them united, creating pressure groups in the society through ensuring the women involvement, community awareness raising, sensitizing the community leaders and influential personnel, making them responsive towards the women needs and demands, establishing good governance in the society, ensuring support from local government officials and representatives, providing legal support necessary to protect their rights and in all respect taking their side.
