In Bangladesh there are a lot of widows. They are their days in a very inhuman condition. Most of the widows of poor household have no food security. They are not getting necessary facilities including treatment facilities from the government and development actors. Some of them have sons and daughters and they have given them marriage but they do not oversee the well being of their mothers and even not giving the food to their mothers. Again, they have been treating them as a burden of the family and society. The widow aged below 50 usually are usually becoming the victim of violence and they are not getting justice from the society. They are not aware enough about their rights and do not know the ways to protect them from any violence. The widows of above 50 years of age are the most disadvantaged people in our society due to their old age and as they cannot go out of their residence and manage the food for them. In most cases, they need to pass the days without having any food or taking only one time food in a day.
A small number of widows have been getting government supports but that supports are not enough to mitigate their minimum requirements. However, it is true that both the types of widow are living in a extreme poverty situation. It needs add here that different non government organizations have considerable understanding about the problem situation of the widows living in the country as those they have been working this area for about long times. Along with the understanding the organizations have, to make the understanding more clear, they have conducted several focus group discussions and followed by the focus group discussion findings they have conducted survey to the households of the widows and cross checked the findings. The Focus Group Discussion and social survey findings revealed the following problems and constraints:
1. Through the Focus Group Discussion and household survey identified 5000 widows and they are living in a deplorable conditions.
2. Most of the poor and extreme widows have no food security and as a result they compel to starve very frequently.
3. Most of the widow aged more than 50 are treating as the burden of the family and community as well.
4. They have no dignity in the family, community and society.
5. Very few number of widows received government food or finance distribution card but that are not sufficient to mitigate the minimum requirements of the widows.
6. The widow aged less than 50 have the ability to undertake income generating options but most of them lack capacity and financial support. Due to financial crisis cannot involve in any Income Generating Activities.
7. During Focus Group Discussion and survey the widows informed that they need a suitable shelter which can ensure their food, treatment and other basic requirements.
Considering the above determined problems the organizations need to undertake projects or programs for addressing the above problems and constraints through establishing a shelter house for the widow aged above 50 and create survival option for the widow below the age of 50 under this widow development center.
