The impacts of HIV/AIDS on a country are really tremendous. AIDS is killing millions of people and thus weakening the workforce, fracturing the families and leaving the children orphaned, with concomitant effects on the whole political and socio-economic fabric of a country.
Bangladesh is still considered as a low HIV/AIDS prevalent country. Till now very few number of people found HIV-positive and that HIV prevalence in the adult population is less than 0.01%. However, the country's vulnerability is extremely high. National HIV surveillance indicates that the rate of HIV infection among street-based sex workers in Bangladesh is very high.
Bangladesh has a narrow window of opportunity that has already closed for many other countries: to act early and decisively to prevent a nationwide HIV-AIDS epidemic and affection. The number of HIV/AIDS cases in Bangladesh is still low. However, high-risk behaviors and conditions are extensive in the country as well as in many areas where the related interventions need to be undertaken. Vigorous and prompt action is needed now to prevent the virus transmission.
The Problems exist in the in Bangladesh related to HIV/AIDS are as follows:
- A Lot of floating sex workers: During the day time, the floating sex workers move here and there in the town and make contract with the clients.
- Low levels of condom use by female sex workers
- Low levels of condom use by male sex workers:
- Existence of a lot of clients among some sex workers
- There exist sexually transmitted diseases(STDs)
- High levels of needle sharing among injection drug users(IDUs).
- Lack of knowledge: Among the sex workers and their clients there are lack of awareness about the HIV/AIDS and it is extremely low among the general population.
- High risk groups are not aware about the risk of HIV infection and transmission
To protect the spread in the country like Bangladesh, it need to implement well thought out activities that will prevent and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS infection. During this period of time, some of the organizations have been implementing the programs.
