Education and School based Problems and Constraints for the children living in River Basin and Coastal Belt Area.

In Bangladesh there are a lot of areas which is extremely disaster prone. The people living in this area are vulnerable and poverty stricken.  In many areas more than 53% people are living below the poverty line. It is also mentionable that among the poor people more than 35% are extreme poor.

Among these households there exist a lot of children and they are not going to school due to extreme poverty. The guardians and parents are not aware about the education of their children and instead of education. They like to involve them in domestic activities. Therefore, they need some sorts of awareness and motivation to change out looks and attitudes.

The government of Bangladesh has a developed “National Education Policy 2000”, which has given priority of creating awareness. It was really a very positive initiative of the government no doubt but from the part of the government there is no active efforts have been undertaken to make the people aware and ensure education for the dropout children and children out of school. Considering this perspective the development actors should prioritize the issues and need to take all out effort for contributing to the achievement of Education for all (EFA) through raising community awareness and ensuring their involvement.

In the river basin and coastal belt areas there are a lot of children who never go to school. Lack of community initiatives, motivation and community awareness are the major constraints of this low literacy.
In the Government and Non- Government primary school there exist School Management Committee (SMC) and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) but due to lack of awareness and efficiency they cannot contribute to the quality education effectively. If they have the capacity and skills they will be able to contribute to increase the quality of education more effectively.
Especially at the school which is situated at the remote areas and in these school there are lack facilities which hampering the quality education. They get some sorts of facilities but not in time and it is not sufficient enough.
Again, in the school there lack of play materials and therefore, the student cannot play during the off period though it is important for the education and children’s growth. So, any proposed project should be addressed the issue and should provide some play materials for ensuring the amusement opportunity as a instrument of encouragement.
Furthermore, the sanitation status of the schools is not satisfactory. In some school there is no latrine for the student use. In some school there exist latrines but that is for teacher’s use only. Again, in some school there exist latrines for student but it unusable due to lack of maintenance and unhygienic.
The identified problems are:

-    Lack of quality education
-    Lack of knowledge and understanding among the School Management Committee members
-    Inactive patents teachers association (PTA)
-    Lack of initiative among the PTA members.
-    Poor facilities for education like books and materials
-    Lack of ability to send their child to school
-    One way communication
-    Lack of awareness among the guardians and interest to send the children to school as they use the child labor in domestic affairs as well as some times in agricultural work.

The Non Government organization should address the above problems and improve the educational status as well as contribute to education for all.
