Rain water harvesting for the people living in Arsenic and salinity prone areas specially in coastal belt areas

Water no doubt one of the nature’s most necessary and important gifts for the mankind and it is an indispensable factor or element for the survival of the human beings. But among the existing water only less than 1% of it is potable, the rest is being unsafe for consumption people living the arsenic and salinity prone areas are supporting from acute safe water crisis. The main sources of water are the ground water, surface water and rain water. But if the ground and surface water remain contaminated the water will remain unsafe for drinking and then the people fall in severe crisis of safe water. As per report of the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 1.1 billion people across the world draw water from unsafe sources, causing widely spread diseases including diarrhea. According to the quality information of World Health Organization, if it is found 10 micrograms Arsenic then it is arsenic contaminated and unsafe for drinking. Gradually the Arsenic patients increasing, in 2010 the arsenic patients were 56758 and it was 28389 and 38320 in 2008 and 2009 respectively. 28.9% water sources are highly arsenic contaminated. Again, the people of coastal belt areas also suffering salinity problem and they are not getting safe drinking water. So, to mitigate the immediate needs and demands of safe water it is necessary to ensure safe drinking water to vulnerable people living in arsenic and salinity areas. We perceived that the rain water harvesting may be the potential source to mitigate the needs and demands of safe water. So, the project we will design need to take initiatives to mitigate the safe water needs through ensuring harvesting the rain water.
